56Anti Aging Foods good for memory
I have never been known for my memory. I've tried many things to improve my memory, but I think I'm beyond help. I've purchased many memory courses, but as my wife points out, I can't remember where I put them. I think she threw them away.
Now that I have retired, I have more time to worry about things such as my memory. People tell me memory gets worse the older they get. That means I'm in big trouble. That's why anything articles that talk about memory catch my eye. I guess I'm still looking for that magic formula.
Most adults are afraid of losing their memory: I have learned over the course of time that I'm in good company. The people I have known seem to be as afraid of losing their mental capacity as their physical capacity. I'm sure you've heard someone say about someone spending their final days in wheel chair or confined to a bed, "At least she still has her mind." As we age, we naturally lose some physical agility, and also naturally lose some mental agility, the ability to multi-task and do things quickly.
But the good news is, there are things we can do to help keep or even improve our mental capacity, which is the ability to reason and use our experience. My concern here is the types of anti aging foods that can affect our memory.
Balance your diet: I have learned over the years from various experts, doctors, and articles, that it is important to balance in the foods we eat. A good balance is about one-third carbohydrates, one-third protein, and one-third fat. One-third of each. That's not too hard to remember!
So we don't really want to load up on the bread and rolls that are complimentary at restaurants. I've read that this will spike our insulin. Someone even said that carbohydrates are to the brain what cigarettes are to the lungs. So we should not overdo the breads.
Yes, fish is good! All the studies I read indicate that eating fish is not only good for our hearts, but also may help prevent memory loss and stroke in healthy, older adults. It seems that broiled or baked tuna and other fish high in omega-3 fatty acids (salmon, mackerel, anchovies) three or more times per week is really good for us.
Tofu, not so good: I have also learned through the course of my studies that eating the wrong foods can affect us adversely. Eating high amounts of soy foods, such as tofu, comes under this category. Studies seem to show that soy products provide some neural benefits to the middle-aged and young but could harm those over 65.
So that's a start to memory maintenance through some anti aging foods. Now if I can just remember that there was something I was going to do about my eating habits.
